Ragtime music became popular in the 1890's.
The music was much different then what other artists were playing. It was upbeat, syncopated, exciting, and of course great for dancing. It had a "ragged rhythm. Though it began in red light districts, ragtime soon became a popular and published form of music. Ragtime was a combination of European classical influence and american blues. It was the kind of music that amateur musician were playing without sheet music. Unlike jazz, by the end of it's run ragtime was almost always played from sheet music. "It is never right to play ragtime fast." -Scott Joplin
"Ragtime was a fanfare for the 20th century." -Russell Lynes |
