When rock really transitioned from metal-rock to what was referred to as alternative-rock, was around 1991. This transition was recognized when Nirvana's album "Nevermind" was a huge success. Even after their lead singer died, the movement into alternative-rock was not lost. Bands like Alice in Chains , Pearl Jam, and Smashing Pumpkins helped keep the new style of music very much alive. Alternative was one of the biggest styles in the 90's, and is still widely listened to now a days. You have bands like the Red Hot Chili peppers who are still around today, and they started in this uprising of alternative love.

When alternative rock was started, it was thought to be a new unique style of music that only the musicians had control over. Not too long after it came around, huge record labels took a hold of the music and started to change it for their benefit. With this turn over the uniqueness of alternative was slowly slipping away. Music was beginning to be cleaned up, and this changed the sound. In about 1995 alternative rock and punk were being transitioned into mainstream pop.
By the end of this ten years, music had gone through a roller coaster of different sounds. Towards the nearing of 2000, Britpop was being introduced to everyone, with bands like Creed, Bush, and Red Hot Chili Peppers; but it could never take over the love of alternative rock. |
